London's Newest Underground Station: Before & After
In just over 17 years, London welcomes the newest train station on the Underground Network, ironically on the overground line – Barking Riverside Station.
On Monday 18th, the first commuter train arrived from Barking mainline station to an open vantage of the River Thames, however this view may not last for long as the desired intention is to provide access for a purpose-built future housing estate in East London to the surrounding areas.
The government plans on 10,000 homes being built with plans in works for another 10,000 and a second station added.
Before Access
The station is now confirmed as the last line on the line running to Gospel Oak via Barking. To see how this would benefit future Londoners travelling to nearby locations, we used TRACC to show a map contour of access to parts of London, with six public transport travel time variables, broken down by 10 minutes each. Using a given Tuesday morning between the hours of 7am and 9am, of the access to the rest of London with the current setup and by introducing the new station, how passengers can access different parts of London in the same timeframe.
After Access
In an appearance resembling a larger blanket, the improved access TRACC image includes the areas of Hackney, Chigwell to the East and North and vastly improving south of the river in Bermondsey, Deptford and Lewisham. It will come as little surprise to see more houses being taken quickly in an area that is so close to Central London.
